THOUSANDS BESIEGE SHOW

ATTENDANCES WELL MAINTAINED.

MANY COMPETITIONS IN FULL SWING.

MINISTER OF FINANCE IMPRESSED. Thousands of people from far and wide continue to flc.ok to the Waikato Winter Show and the attendances for the first two days are officially stated to disclose an encouraging Increase on those for the corresponding days last year. Competitions, chiefly embracing artistic and cultural pursuits, are attracting enormous interest. A prominent visitor at the big exhibition to-day was the Minister of Finance (Right Hon. J. G. Coates) who expressed himself as highly Impressed with the general arrangements.

COUNTRY VISITORS. SPECIAL .TRAINS ARRIVE. NEW .BUTTER EXAMINED. Special trains from Thames, Te Aroha, Paeroa and' Morrinsville brought many 'hundreds of visitors to view the big exhibition and carnival to-day. The school dancing, musical and elocutionary and play reading competitions are all well supported and attract large audiences at each session. In the opinion of the judges the work of the competitors is generally of a high standard. There seems no doubt that through the medium of the Winter Show the competitions have again become firmly established in Hamilton as a permanent feature. Many entrants come from districts many miles frorr. Hamilton. Kiwi Factory Sample. Though not made available for general exhibition, a box of lib pats of butter from the Kiwi Dairy Company’s factory at ‘Christchurch was opened at the show this morning and sampled by Mr W. Dempster, dairy instructor, and other nutter graders. This is the butter, a description of which occupied space in the press a few weeks ago, when it was stated that the methods of manufacture were revolutionary.

Mr L. Topliss, wlio is a partner with Mr L. Hansen in the new venture, told a Waikato Times’ reporter to-day that the butter was made from week-old cream under an entirely new system of pasteurisation. The chief claim made for it was that its keeping quality excelled that of all other New Zealand-made butters. Its flavour, too, was said to be of a type desired especially by London agents. The butter evoked favourable comment from most of the graders who tasted it, though no official statements of opinion could be obtained. Surprise was expressed that the butter should possess such tine bloom and body in view of the methods of manuture roughly outlined by Mr ToplissMr Topliss is taking the butter today to New Plymouth to be examined by grading experts there. The pats are wrapped in tin foil, the outer covering being attractively designed In black paper. Popular Amusements. The many extra amusement features staged daily by the Winter Show Association are being warmly supported and appreciated by the swarms of patrons. It is expected that a Y.M.G.A. athletic display will be an additional attraction this evening.
