CROSS-EXAMINATION OPENS. THEORIES REGARDING TRAGEDY. On resuming after lunch, further details regarding the experiments made in Auckland with the rifles found at Ruawaro were ?>iven by Detective Sneddon. "Witness then corroborated the evidence of Detective Allsopp relating to the later investigations on accused’s property. After identifying further exhibits produced in court, Detective Snedden completed his evidence-in-ohief at 3 o’clock, In answer to Mr Northcroft, witness said he was in charge at Ruawaro until October 18, when the chief detective arrived. He could not say how often the chief detective visited Auckland, Mr Northcroft: When you arrived It was the common view that Mrs Lakey had had a seizure, and that when Lakey discovered his wife at the duckpond he went away?—l could not say that. Did you ever hear that view expressed?—No. Did you read the papers?—Not on the 17th. You say positively that you never heard that view expressed?—No. Might it be that that view v;as held without you knowing it?—Yes. Did you make a thorough search of the boxes?—Fairly thorough.
