Play in the French championship tournament was resumed to-day with the following results: — Men’s Singles. Quarter-finals. —Stefani (Italy), defeated 'Perry (Britain), 6—2, I—m g 7 ( 6 2; Boussus (France) defeated Austin (Britain), 5—7, 6—2, 9 2,2 6, 6—l; Crawford (Australia), defeated Hughes (Britain), 4 6 6—4, 6—2, 6—3; Cramm (Germany) defeated Menzel (Czechoslovakia), 6—2, 6—3, 3—6, 3—6, 6—3. Men’s Doubles. Quarter-finals. —Quist and Turnbull (Australia) defeated Merlin and Gentied (Czechoslovakia), 6 —2, 5 7, G —2, 6—4. Women’s Singles. Quarter-final. —Miss Jacobs defeated Miss Payot, 6—3, I—6, B—6. Quarter-finals. —Mdlle. Mathieu defeated Signorina Valerio, 6—3, 6—2; Miss Scriven defeated Miss Lyle, 6 l, 6—l. Women’s Doubles. Second Round. —Mdlle Couquerque and Miss Thomas defeated Misses Hardwicke and Stammers, 2 6, 7 5, 6—2; Miss Metaxa and Mine. Rosambert defeated Misses Hartigan and Molesworth, 6—2, 6 1. A Traglo Ending. Perry, realising that he was the only Britisher left in the singles was very nervous against Stefani; consequently the Italian, playing coolly, led two sets to one. The .match ended tragically. Pefry was leading 2—l in the fourth set when he slipped badly and strained bis foot. Perry crying out in pain, pluckily attempted, to complete ' the match, but was overcome and fainted immediately the last ball was played. Best Play In Contest. Cramm and Menzel produced the best tennis of the tournament, the clean, hard hitting of both players evoking great enthusiasm. Cramm was only victorious after a long strenuous contest. Crawford v. Hughes. Crawford began unimpressively, being upset by Hughes’s heavily sliced shots, ' but later Crawford attacked Hughes’ backhand. The Englishman then tried lobbing, but Crawford’s smashes and volleys were cleverly angled. Boussus’ Easy Win. Boussus against Austin was leading 5 —2 in the first set w T hen Austin took five games in a row. Boussus was on top in the next two sets. Austin attempted to take the net, but lie was frequently passed. Austin rallied after an interval, wfinning the fourth set, which exhausted him, Boussus finally scoring an easy victory.
