UNEMPLOYED IN BRITAIN.
FURTHER DECLINE.
LATEST RETURNS. (Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 28. A further decline in the number of persons unemployed in 'Britain and an increase in the number of those in employment are disclosed in the latest return issued by the Ministry of Labour.
This states that on May 1.4 there were approximately 10,187,000 insured persons, aged from 16 to 55, in employment. This was 47,000 more than on April 23 and 570,000 moro than on May 22, 1933. The improvement during the past month affected most of the principal industries, except coalmining—in which the decline was due mainly to temporary stoppages at a number of collieries in Yorkshire —and the wool textile industry. The numbers of unemployed .persons on the registers at the employment exchanges in Britain on May li were:— Wholly unemployed .... 1,658,677 Temporarily stopped ... 341,028 Normally in casual employment 90,676 Total 2,090,381
This total was 57,814 less than the numbers, on the registers on April 23, 1934, and 492,498 less Ilian a year ago. ' The latest total comprised 1,706,797 men, 52,'560 boys, 289,664 women, and 41,360 girls.
