Concert in Hamilton. The members of St. Mary’s Choir, Hamilton, under the baton of Mr. J. T. Battersby, will produce Gounod’s “Messe Solennelle” at the Theatre Royal on Sunday, April 29. The soloists will be:—Madame Cora Melvin, soprano; Mr. W. Trembath, tenor; Mr. E. 'H. Quill, baritone. Concert Items will also be given. Recital In Hamilton. Miss Margaret Roe (violinist), who recently arrived from London, and Miss Violet Rucroft (pianist) will give a recital in Hamilton in June. Choirs for Hamilton? Dr. Thomas, of Auckland, hopes to form a Male Choir and possibly a Ladies’ Choir in Hamilton. Some years ago Hamilton had a very strong Male Choir, under the conductorship of Mr Gladstone Hill. Its concerts were very enjoyable. Dressmaker to Prominent Singer. Mavis Bennett, whose singing delights listeners in 'England, has had the sort of career of which every girl dreams. When 16 she was earning a bare living as a dressmaker, and scrimping herself to pay for a few singing lessons. One day she was given a part with an amateur operatio society, and had the good fortune to be heard by some leaders of the D’Oyly Carte Company, who offered her an engagement. £IOO,OOO from a Song. j Ivor Novello stated recently in LonI don that his war-time song, “Keep the | Home Fires Burning," must have made : £IOO,OOO from all sources. ! It is still a popular gramophonej number. 60 Choirs Compete. Fifty choirs, including some from New South Wales, competed at the Queensland National Eisteddfod at Brisbane. The Brisbane Eisteddfod Choir won the chief prize. There were 2000 competitors at the Eisteddfod. The Spivakovskys In Melbourne. i Jascha Spivakovsky (pianist) and Tossy Spivakovsky (violinist), who were in Hamilton last year, have been appointed to the teaching staff of Melbourne University Conservatorium. A third brother, Adolf, a baritone singer, recently arrived In Australia. New Zoaland Song Competition. > Acting on the advice of the Gov-ernor-General, the Wellington Competitions Society recently offered a first prize of £25 and a second prize i of £5 for the best original song with 1 accompaniment. I Entries have closed, and the secretary of the society states that 10 i songs have been received. They come, from almost every place in New Zealand. I The songs have been forwarded to the adjudicator.
