OPEN TO FRAUD.
LAX METHODS. MAGISTERIAL CRITICISM. UPKEEP OF SINGLE MEN’S HOME. (By TelegrapTi.—Fress Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The method of contribution by which the single men’s home in Fitzgerald Avenue is maintained "'as severely criticised by the magistrate, Mr Mosley, this morning, when dealing with Alex Scott Collie, on a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond in that he was guilty of collecting money by falsely representing that he was acting on behalf of the single men’s home. The charge was dismissed under the offenders’ Probation Act. . Mr Mosley added: ‘‘lt is a pity to see the good-natured British public taken down in this way. If the single men’s home wants to desene the sympathy of the public they will have to get a different system. The present one is open to fraud. It is quLe evident to me that accused was guiLy of fraud in dealing with collection coupons without authority. Collie gave evidence that he had been acting manager of the home for a period and as there was a considerable sum owing him, he had been collecting it by the use of coupons.
