CAMBRIDGE DISTRICT.

ITEMS OF INTEREST.

NO ALTERATION.

IN RELIEF PAY RATES.

REPLY FROM MINISTER. (Special to Times.) CAMBRIDGE, Monday. Keen disappointment will be felt among 1 the unemployed in Cambridge and all country districts at tlie result of efforts made by the local association to prove the method or 811003110? reher funds by the Unemployment hoard, from the reply received from the Minister of Employment to their requests. At a meeting held on February 1. at which Mr Lye. M.P., attended, the following- resolution was passed: "That this meeting definitely protests against the differentiation in the rate of relief pay between the cities and country towns and requests that uniform rates of pay per day and the elimination or the standdown week be put into operation Immediately.” Mr Lye conveyed the requests to the Minister. He has received the following reply:— “With reference to the representation made by you I have to advise that full and careful consideration has been given to the points raised. “In regard to the request that relief workers be paid a uniform rate of pay per day throughout New Zealand and that such rate of pay equal the rates made to relief workers in the four principal centres, I wish to state that the dally rates of pay for relief workers both in the country and In the city are the same—namely 10s in the case of married men and 7s Gd In the case of single men. If the Unemployment Committee meant to convey that the scale of relief throughout the country he made uniform and equal to the present scale of relier payable to relief workers In the four principal centres, then I regret to say that the fund would not be sdfficicnt to meet the cost. Board’s Funds Limited. “The question or what assistance can be given to the unemployed is one that is determined by the funds at the board’! disposal, and tr relier workers in Cambridge with one. two and three dependants, and those with over three dependants, art not receiving more than 10s 9d and 20i 8d each per week it is because the board’! hinds will not permit or an increase lr pay. “I he board's funds have to be disbursed to the various centres on tha same basis as that adopted In many centres in sub-allocating the weekly allocations, so as to afford the greatest measure of relief possible In' cases where tbe degree of necessity warrants preferential treatment. “The board considers that this basis of allocation Is the most equitable evolved, and is capable or the greatest degree of elasticity. Stand Down Week, “As has been stated previously the observance or otherwise of a stand-down week is a matter for local arrangement, and tbe board does not stipulate that either procedure be adopted, as such is entirely optional. However, It Is pointed out that the abolition of the stand-down week would not result In any pecuniary advantage to the relief workers at Cambridge, ror tlie reason' that the present allocation would require to be so disbursed as to provide work and pay in four weeks out of four instead or three weeks out or four as at present. “It Is regretted that tlie present allocation received by Cambridge is the maximum that can he made available, and, unfortunately, there Is no possibility or an increase at the present time. It is pointed out that the allocation Is capable or being disbursed in such a way as to provide the maximum rate under Scneme .No. 5 rules to tnose workers whose circumstances warrant such a measure of relief, those in a less needy position of course, being reduced proportionately.”
