A community feast of 22 Filipino lettuce-pickers in San Luis Obispo, California, to which their two American employers were also Invited, resulted in an 'agonising death for 13 workers. The remaining nine, who partook of a dish of “ mushrooms ” which were really toadstools of a highly poinsonous variety, are sure to die, say the doctors. In fact, the funerals of the first 13 who have died have been delayed so that a mass funeral for all may be held. The autopsies show that acute yellow atrophy of the liver was the direct cause of death.
