SOUTHWELL SCHOOL.

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING. POSTPONED FROM LAST YEAR. VISITORS ENTERTAINED. Postponed from the end of last year, the annual prize-giving ceremony of the Southwell School, Claudelands, was held at the school on Saturday afternoon in ideal weather. The 'visitors were entertained to afternoon tea by the headmaster (Mr H. G. Sergei) and staff before the ceremony commenced. Mr Sergei briefly outlined the work of the school for the year and the pupils, led and accompanied on the piano by Mr E. 11. Apthorp, gave some delightful choruses from the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Before presenting the prizes, Mr A. 11. Nicoll, of Cambridge, recalled the early days of the school and expressed pleasure at its rapid development into a preparatory school with excellent- traditions. Speaking especially to the boys, Mr Nicoll instanced the influence of Robert Burns, who above everything, had been one of the world s greatest gentlemen. He reminded them of Burns’ democratic views, and pointed out that consideration for all classes of the community was a characteristic of a gentleman. He urged them to live lives of kindliness and gentleness, like Burns had done, which would bring happiness to themselves and, more important still, happiness to others.
