ANTARCTIC VOYAGE
BIAR OF OAKLAND. DEPARTURE FROM DUNEDIN. ASSISTANCE APPRECIATED. (By Telegrapn.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Friday. Setting out on the last stage of her voyage, the Byrd Antarctic supply chip Bear of Oakland left Dunedin this evening for the frozen south. Everything depended on the arrival of the equipment from Auckland. This came to hand during the day by goods train and aeroplane. The equipment brought by aeroplane readied the ship about 4 p.m. This was despatched from Auckland by the limited express on Thursday evening and then by air from Palmerston North. The Bear of Oakland is in excellent trim. Her holds are Riled with supplies and equipment, her hunkers are full, and her decks are piled high with assorted freight. Sections of lints are lashed on the fore deck, occupying almost every foot of space, while on the well deck aft a large case containing a tractor is lashed, and cases both large and small occupy almost the whole of the remaining deck space.
The vessel was in port for six days. It was the original Intention to despatch her for the Antarctic last Saturday night, but the delay in the arrival of the vessel with the necessary equipment at Auckland upset the early sailing arrangements. Just prior to the departure of the ship Lieutenant English said he was extremely appreciative of the help given during their stay at Dunedin. The assistance given by the Government and the use of one of its aeroplanes was invaluable.
