reports on petitions.

COMMITTEES TO WORK HARDER. SUGGESION BY PRIME MINISTER. (Times Parliamentary Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Delay in the presentation of reports on petitions was referred to by Mr H. T- Armstrong (Lab., Christchurch East) in a question he asked the Prime Minister ‘ (the Right Hon. G. W. Forbes) In the House of Representatives. Mr Armstrong inquired if the Government would arrange for important petitions referred to by the House to select oommittees to be dealt withbefore the session ended or for committees to sit during the recess to deal with them. The session, said Mr Armstrong, was likely to finish before committees would have •an opportunity of dealing with them, thus causing disappointment and imposing Injustice on many petitioners. Mr Forbes suggested that committees should take advantage of every available moment between now and the end of the session.. The difficulty could be overcome by committees sitting more days. The A to L and M to Z Public Petitions Committees had sat only eight days since they were set up on Ootober 6. Mr Armstrong: They must be loafing on the job. Mr Forbes said he would not say that. Nevertheless they had a big job ahead, and should meet at every opportunity. Mr A. S. Riohards (Lab., Rosldll) :> Some members Eire on more than one committee.

Mr Forbes: If oommittees take advantage of every day available there should be no difficulty In oleaning up all the work before the finish of the session.
