WAIKATO WATER.
j CONCLUSION OF EVIDENCE. CONSIDERATION. IN CAMERA. (By Telegraph.—press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The public sittings of the Select Committee to consider the Waikato Water Bill were concluded to-day when addresses were given by Mr. J. Stanton, Auckland city solicitor, Mr, H. m. Rogerson, representing the local bodies supporting the bill, and Mr. E. H. Northcroft, representing the proposed company. At the close of the proceedings, the chairman of the committee, Mr. S. G. Smith, said the only point lie wished to raise was the financing of the scheme. He asked whether some evidence, not necessarily for publication, could be given as to where the money was coming from. Mr. Northcroft said he would discuss that with the promoters, hut there were reasons why that information should not he divulged. .
Gauging Public Opinion. Mr. Stanton said that if the committee desired to have that information in confidence the city was perfectly agreeable. The council had no intention whatever of interfering with the financing of the scheme. The public opinion in the areas concerned was, to say the least of it, very much divided. , , Mr. Smith: The evidence put before us has been so clear that the committee will have no difficulty in determining what is behind public opinion In all these districts. He complimented counsel on their very able and lucid presentation of their cases. The committee will now consider in camera the evidence that has been submitted to it.
