NEW ZEALANDERS ENGAGED.
SEVEN ALREADY TAKEN ON. WELL OVER 100 APPLICATIONS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Since the Jacob Ruppert arrived seven New Zealanders have joined the expedition in various capacities, several as winchmen. Three more experienced seamen will be engaged to-morrow. Their qualifications must include a knowledge of seas in the Polar regions, and, if possible, experience on the ice. Well over one hundred applications have been received from men and youths to join the expedition.MOTORS, TRACTORS, DOGS. EXPEDITION WELL EQUIPPED. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Means of transport is all-important In Polar exploration, and Rear-Ad-miral Byrd’s expedition is better equipped in this respect than any previous expedition. He is taking to the Antarctic four aeroplanes, six motor-tractors, nearly 150 dogs and about 50 sledges. COWS ON BOARD. FRESH MILK FOR THE MEN. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Three purebred Guernsey cows are carried on board the Byrd Antarctic expedition steamer Jacob Ruppert for the purpose of supplying those on board with fresh milk. - The cows were specially selected from pedigree farms in I lie United States. The present market value of the animals is about £3O each, but should they return safely from I lie Antarctic it is anticipated that they will be worth about £12,000 for advertising purposes in demonstrating the powers of endurance of the breed. Tlie cows are in tlie charge of Mr Edgar F. Cox, a farmer of Arcade, New York State, wiio devotes bis whole time to looking after them. MAKING HIS SECOND TRIP. FORMERLY AT ARAPUNI. WELLINGTON, Werlnesday. The Byrd expedition was joined at Wellington to-day by Mr H. R. Young, who was recently engaged in diving work at Arapuni hydro-electric works. Mr Young was with Rear-Admiral Byrd on 'bis last expedition in the City of New York. For 16 years lie was a Royal Navy diver.
