Two miners, Kenneth McLaren (24) and Albert Cole (26) were asphyxiated by dynamite fumes at the Phoenix mines at Morsemen. After a charge had been fired Cole descended, and when no signal was received McLaren volunteered to investigate. He found Cole in a state of collapse, but before he could rescue him he was himself overcome. The two were brought to the surface but died soon after.
