SHEEP PRICES BETTER. BACONERS EASE: PORKERS RISE. VALUES AT WESTFIELD. There were average yardings In most classes at the weekly Westfield fat stock sale yesterday, and price levels generally tended to improve. Beef cattle were offered in smaller numbers, there being over 100 less than at last week’s sale. The demand was keen and values remained firm, particularly for the lighter weight prime steers. The fall in beef prices of a week ago did not continue, and prime ox beef again sold at 19s pei 1001 b., with other lines at late rates. A particularly choice cow from Papatoetoe sold at £6 17s. Sheep were penned In full numbers and met with a steady demand. Lighter weight prime ewes Improved by as much as 2s, but the heavier sorts were dull of sale. Lambs were again of good quality, although a few light-conditioned animals were offered. Keen competition ruled, and prices improved by Is to 2s on the last sale. In the pig market, the offering was a large one. There was a slackening in the demand for baconers and values were easier, but porkers sold at improved rates. Large stores were firm at last week’s prloes. The yarding of calves was not up to the average, and a brisk sale resulted, with values improving as the auction progressed. An extra prime Hereford steer from Mr. R. G. Findlay, of Miranda, realised £4 10s, and other good lines sold well. The following is a summary of the prices realised for fat stock for the last two weeks at the Westfield fat stock sales:— This week. Last week.

South Auckland Consignments. Top prices in the ox beef market were realised by lines from Mr. B. Reed, of Te Kauwhata, and from the Walkeria Borstal Institute, both lots making up to £7 12s 6d. These were closely followed by a choice lot from Mr. W. J. Ralph, ex Mahuta, with prices up to £7 10s. Lots from Mr, J. A. Hill, of Ohinewai, and Mr. C. Hemming, of Tirau, brought up to £6 17s 6d. From Mr. C. Proctor, of Ohinewai, came a consignment realising up to £6. In the cow and heifer beef market, a line of heifers from Mr. H. Bayly, of Okoroire, sold up to £6 ss. Cows from Mr. J. A. Hill, of Ohinewai, brought up to £5 12s 6d, and a consignment from Mr. O. McCutcheon, of Rangiriri, sold at £5 2s 6d. An entry from Mr. W. J. Ralph, of Mahuta, brought up to £4 7s 6d.

Alfred Buckland and Sons. Alfred Buckland and Sons, Limited, report on the sale as follows: We penned fat cattle to the number -of 186, as against 283 last week, comprising 100 steers and 86 cows and heifers. Although the yarding was small, prices showed little or no improvement on last week, light prime 6teers being very Arm. Prime young oow’s and heifers sold freely at late rates. Extra choice ox sold to 19s per 1001 b.; choice and prime, 15s to 17s; secondary and plain, 13s to 14s; prime young cow and heifer beef, 17s to 19s; ordinary cow, 12s to 15s. The demand was fairly keen and values improved as the sale progressed.
