SUN’S OXYGEN GLOW.

NEW THEORY OF CORONA. AMERICAN ASTRONOMERS’ VIEWS. A new explanation of the cause of the sun's corona, that brilliant halo of white light visible during a total eclipse, has been offered by Harvard College Observatory. It is described as a most Important discovery, which may eventually solve other oosmlc riddles. Professor Harlow Shapley, director of the observatory, stales that oxygen plays a large part in the creation of the’ corona. The source of energy causing this oxygen glow Is not known, but it Is stated that the light comes from oxygen atoms thrown Into a state of high energy and vibration. Dr. Walter Adams, head of Mount Wilson Observatory, California, commenting on.the discovery, said: > “No ono has believed for years that the source was an unknown gas. We were reasonably certain that It was oxygen, helium, or a gas of that type radiating from the sun which could not be produced in the laboratory.” Astronomical photographs of the last total eclipse (on August 31, 1932) assisted Dr. Donald Menzel, of Harvard Observatory, and Dr. J. C. Boyce, of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in making the discovery.
