FEELING UNABATED. /MISSOURI HORROR. . ; ' . " ' •.s THE SHERIFF’S EXCUSE. * / ' GOVERNOR’S , DECLARATION. '’rUtert t-ress Assn. — Elec. Tel conyrigtiU) (Received Nov. 30. 12.50 p.m.) NEW YORK, Nov. 29. ! Feeling over the lynohlngs continued unabated to-day, In fact it increased as the result of the Missouri affair, in whioh it is now revealed that the negro was literally burned alive 1 and not hanged, while a madly laughing woman shouted encouragement tg the lynchers. The sheriff explained: “We turned the prisoner over to the mob for foar that 10 other negroes and 60 whit® men In gaol might also be subjected to mob hysteria and Innocent prisoners might be killed.” Governor Park, of Missouri, announced there would be a thorough investigation. He declared: “There is no justification for the affair. The lynching is a dangerous blow to our Constitution law and civilisation. I want tbe mob leaders prosecuted.” Habeas corpus proceedings resulted in tbe return of the four prisoners to Maryland, the scene of the lynching, where people started to boycott against Baltimore goods as a protest against Governor Richie’s action. The latter, in a formal statement to-day, declared: “It was my plain duty as the Governor of Maryland to see that the law Is supreme, and it was only when the local officials failed to perform their duties that I acted.” In Kansas a white prisoner who yesterday killed a negro gaoler in an attempt to escape, had to be spirited away from the county gaol to the State penitentiary in order to save him from the threats of the mob.
