St. Andrew’s Day. —All banks are closed to-day,- St. Andrew’s Day. Teaoher Appointed. —At a meeting vesterday the Auokland Education Board appointed Miss U. Platts, as-sistant-mistress at Gordonton. Dunedin Dispute Ended.-— All vessels at Dunedin which were held up on Tuesday were worked by waterside labour yesterday morning, the dispute being settled. Show Exeoutlve Congratulated.— At a meeting of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association executive today, the president, Mr H. Windsor, congratulated all concerned on the success of the Summer Show. Agricultural & Pastoral Association. —The next meeting of the executive of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association will be held on the last Thursday in January. Melanesian Mission Vessel. The Melanesian Mission’s new motor-ship Southern Gross is reported to have cleared Thursday island yesterday, en route from England to the Solomon Islands, where she will be stationed. Perla Rabbit Board. —At a meeting of the board held on Wednesday, It was decided that the rabblter would in future spend one day on every hundred aores. Any time taken up in excess of this is to be paid for by the ratepayer. Telephone "Oh’s.” —Toll call users will have noticed that exchange attendants, when repeating the numbers, now say “oh" instead of “naught." This is a Dominion-wide innovation, in order to test the use of “oh," which is considered better than “naught” for purposes of clarity. Use of Dining-Rooms Granted. —At a meeting of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association executive committee to-day a request from the Hamilton East Sohool to hold a dinner In the association’s dining-rooms at Claudelands in connection with. the jubilee celebrations on December 16, was granted. Bible In Sohools. —At yesterday’s meeting of the Auckland Education Board, it was reported that parents at Maungatapere and Ngahinapouri had voted strongly in favour of the Nelson system of. Bible reading In schools, and approval of Its introduction in the schools in these districts was given by the board. , , Fail In Gymnasium. —A fall In a Hamilton private gymnasium resulted in the admission to the Waikato Hospital, suffering from slight head Injuries, of Milan Babich, aged 24 years, a farm-hand employed by Mr. T. Millicioh, of Whatawhata. His condition is not regarded as serious. Bankrupt Medical Offloer. —The adjourned meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of Anthony Ormsby, medical officer, Otorohanga, was held on Tuesday. After the bankrupt had been examined at some length, it was arranged that he should make small monthly payments from his salary towards the liquidation of his liabilities. Traders’ Flnaifoe Corporation.— The ninth annual report of the Traders’ Finance Corporation, Limited, Auckland, for the year ended September 30 shows a net profit of £2643. After making provision for income tax, a balance of £1364 is left, out of which the directors recommend the payment of the preference dividend for the half-year to September 30, 1933. Methodist Mission Anniversary.— The 82nd anniversary of the founding of'the old Alexandra Street Primitive Methodist Church, now the Methodist Social Service Mission, Auckland, which fell on March 16 this year, will bo commemorated by special services next Sunday. The Camp Question. —At a meeting of Hamilton unemployed in the Y.M.C.A. buildings last evening, it was remarked by the chairman, Mr G. T. Rivett, during a brief discussion on the camp question, that If a guaranteed wage of 12s 6d a day was forthcoming no difficulty would be experienced in Ailing them. Speedwell Oil Case. —The hearing of the case in which 49 shareholders In Speedwell Oil Company (N.Z.), Limited, claim £4633 from Harry Clinton MoElwain, a former director of the company, was continued in the Supreme Court at Auckland yesterday, when shareholders gave evidence on the subject of alleged inducement and damage. Decision was reserved. School Essay Competition. —A total of 309 entries was received from primary school children all over the Dominion for a competition promoted by tire National Confidence Carnival Committee for an essay on an outstanding incident of New Zealand history. The awards are; —First prize, £5, Polly Larkins, Rangiotu; second, £2, George Gallins, New Plymouth; third, £l, Albert Staples, Masterton; four of 10s each, Ken James, Owaka High School, South Otago; Vivian Brown, Christchurch; William Hill, Greymouth; Joan Bee, Takapuna, Auckland. Fifty other prizes were awarded.
