THE YEAR’S ESTIMATES.
DETAILS OF EXPENDITURE.
LARGE INCREASE SHOWN
TOTAL VOTE OVER. £3,000,000. (Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Details of the Public Works Department estimates for the year 1033-34, which were presented to the House of Representatives this evening together with the Budget, dlsolose a total vote to publlo works and kindred expenditure of. £3,191,916, as compared with a vote of £2 '* BB ’°** last year, an Increase of over £700,000. Th® main highways vote, whloh Is not Included In the above total, amounts to £l,zt> ,- 000, of whloh £200,000 Is to be utilised In highway contraction, the balance being absorbed by maintenance and administrative oharges. Included in the General Purposes Account, the total vote for which is £2 322»915, are the following Items, (last year’s vote being given in parentheses) :—Railway, construction, £-5, 700 (£100,000); railway imP™'’ 6 ' ments and additions, £310,000 (£llO,000); public buildings, /l?. 6 - 1 * 0 ® (£174 004); development of torn is i, resorts, £21,000 (£21,000); construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, etc., £445,000 (2497,03-1), telegraph extensions, £230,000 (£IOO, 000); lands Improvement, £120,000 (£114,000); irrigation, water-supply and drainage,. £BO,OOO (£70.000) , settlement of unemployed workers, £500,000 (£500,000). The electric supply account shows an Increase from £612,000 to £869,000 for the present year, the sum ot £102,500 being allotted for new works and material for the Horahora-Ara-puni scheme. Increases in expenditure are shown especially in the case of railway, improvements, where the additional amount voted is £200,000, and In telegraph services which have increased by £130,000. Smallen increases have been made also in the allotments for public buildings, lands improvement, and irrigation and drainage. On the other hand there is a substantial reduction in the railway construction estimates from £IOO.OOO to £25,700, while road construction expenditure has been slightly reduced. The item of £232,900, set apart for native ’and settlement is an addition to this year s estimates, having been previously included In the Consolidated Fund Estimates.
