GERMAN ACTOR IN LONDON
A FINE TRIBUTE. SEQUEL TO DEMONSTRATION. United Pross Assn—Elec. Tel. Copyright, LONDON, Sept. 30. Several cries of “Hail, Hitler,'’ were heard in the Shaftesbury theatre on the second night of Gerhardt Hauptmann’s play, “Before Sunset." Herr Weiner Krauss, famous German actor, who had a hostile reception on the first night, was well received and there was no disturbance. Thirty policemen were among the audience. At the end of the performance the actors appeared before the footlights, the curtain rising and falling rapidly, the company apparently fearing that missiles wouid be thrown. A few dissentients cried: “Go back to Germany,” but they were quickly silenced. Herr Krauss advanced to the footlights leading the producer, Mr. Scott, by the hand, and embraced him. Mr. Scott was most nervous. He said: —“Ladies and gentlemen. Bringing Herr Krauss to London is the best I can ever do for the English theatre.” There was tremendous applause when the curtain finally fell. This was partly a tribute to the magnificent acting of Herr Krauss and partly to English sportsmanship seeking to make amends for the previous night’s demonstration.
