MEMORIAL UNVEILED. A SIMPLE CEREMONY. BRITISH PREMIER’S SPEECH. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright (Received Oct. 2, 10.10 a.m.) ALLONNE, Oct. 1. The RlOl memorial unveiling ceremony was marked by great simplicity. Mr Ramsay MacDonald’s Arst act was to place at the foot of the memorial his Cabinet’s wreaths of laurel and autumn llowers, symbolising that the memory of the victims remains green. The band played the French and British Anthems. Dr. Von Eckener, the German commander of the zeppelin, cpnf q wTPAth Mr MacDonald, Lord Londonderry, and the Air Ministry’s officials Aew from Croydon to Beauvais. A French service 'plane flew over the memorial, dropping 48 wreaths. The assemblage, which numbered 10,000 included six survivors. Mr MacDonald, in a brief speech, said: —
“ I thank you simply and humbly. On this wayside road we have found a new union and a new understanding. The memorial means more to our peoples than a dozen diplomatic signed and sealed documents. Our hearts are united in this granite.”
M. Daladier, French Prime Minister, paid a tribute to the crusading spirit of British youth.
