FRENCH HELL SHIP.
DEPARTS FOR DEVIL’S ISLAND. 670 CAGED CONVICTS ON BOARD. LAST MINUTE REPRIEVE. (Bv Telegraph.—Press Vssnciatlon.) (Received Oct. 2, 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 1. A la Rochelle message states that France’s hell ship Lc MaiTinicro sailed to-night with a load of 670 caged convicts on board for Devil’s Island. It was rumoured that the convicts intended to mutiny prior to embarkation, so they were relieved of their shoes and made to walk in clogs along the quayside being escorted by troops with fixed bayonets. One murderer, Boyer, had been literally within minutes of death. The morning he was due to be guillotined news came of President Doumer’s assassination. The new President could nflt consider a petition for the commutation of the sentence without a new trial, so Boyer was given the benefit of the doubt and sent to Guiana.
