The Commission set up to frame a new penal code, headed by the Prussian Minister of Justice, Herr Kirri, recommends that doctors be allowed to shorten the sufferings of the incurably sick by death on the demand of the patient and in the interests of humanity. The removal of the legal ban on duelling to settle affairs of honour is also urged, although a fatal ending would fender the slayer liable to imprisonment. Also the Commission urges severe corporal punishment for brutal crimes and a wider application of the death sentence.
Because the story conveys “ an unGerman conception of God,” the Governor of Schleswig-Holstein has ordered schools to delete from Sortpture lessons thq story of Abraham’s attempted sacrifice of Isaac. The Government has banned the Russian newspaper Izvestla and Pravda as a sequel to the Russo-German press dispute. Nino journalists are returning from Russia, whither Six Soviet correspondents returned to-night.
