SALES TAX.
PROVISION FOR BAD DEBT. CABINET’S OMISSION CRITICISED. AUCKLAND, Friday. The failure of the Government to make provision for .the refund of sales tax paid for a transaction which resulted in a bad debt was discussed al a meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. Provision for such a refund was made in Canada and in Australia, it was stated. A letter from file council to the Minister of Finance, asking for an amendment to provide for a refund, was approved. Discussion also arose on the question whether it is the retailer or the wholesaler who is entitled to the benefit of the 5 per cent discount for prompt payment of the tax. In reply to inquiry by the council, the Minister of Finance, the lion. J. G. Coates, wrote that the question was one for the wholesalers and retailers to settle between them. An amendment to the law, as suggested by the council, would be regarded as an interference in business by the Government. The council approved a draft reply by the chairman, stating there was a moral obligation on the Government to make clear beyond all doubt the intention of its legislation, and not to inlroduce a bone of contention between different sections of the community.
