AUCKLAND BEATS TARANAKI. NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday. In the first match for the Walmsley Shield for 'competition between Auckland and Taranaki League teams the former won by 25 to 17 after a bright game before a good crowd- Tito visitors showed mo-re finish in play, especially among the backs, and, with a strong wind in their favour in the first spell, led at the interval by 11 to 0.
Taranaki played with greater dash in the second spell, and were within throe points of Auckland’s score when Cowley, the Taranaki half, had tho misfortune to break his leg. This unsettled Taranaki, and Auckland scored twice. The home team then scored again, and had the upper hand at the close.
