NEW YORK, Aug. 4

The Stock Exchange was forced to close early this afternoon when fumes, which the exchange officials said apparently came from the explosion of two tear gas bombs, flooded the lower floors of the big building. Police reserves and emergency squads were rushed into the district and held back the assembled thousands, while the affeoted floors were cleared.

The fumes were very dense hut no one was overcome.
