MEMORIAL CANOE.
UNVEILED BY MINISTER. MIGRATION TO AOTEA-ROA. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PATEA, Wednesday. An event of historical importanoa took place at Patea this afternoon, when the handsome TurJ memorial canoe, fashioned of stone, erected in commemoration of Turi, the ancient Maori navigator, and his fellowvoyagers, who took part in the Polynesian migration for Aotea-roa in 1350, was unveiled by Hon. J. A. Young. The occasion attracted a large assembly of Maoris and pakehas. As part of the proceedings there was a procession through the town, hakas, pois, games and other entertainment by the Maoris. A message from Lord Bledisloe says: “May success attend your historic assembly, and may it help in cementing even more closely the brotherhood of Maori and pakeha and fostering the pride of the former ia the race and its traditions.”
