AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB. £3OOO IN STAKES. AUCKLAND, Thursday. The programme for the Avondale ,/ookey Club’s Spring meeting has been approved by the Auckland District Committee, but no word has yet been received by the club from the New Zealand Racing Conference regarfing the dates applied for, October 14 and 16. The amount to be given in slakes totals £3OOO, the same as last year. The Avondale Cup will carry £450, compared with £350 last year, and other races with increased stakes, last year’s values appearing in parentheses, are as follows: Plumpton Handicap, £3OO (£250); Flying Slakes Handicap, £2OO (£175); and President’s Handicap, £175 (£150). HORSEB FOR AUSTRALIA. WELLINGTON, .Wednesday. At least seven horses are due to <eave Wellington for Australia on the Wanganella to-morrow. Autopay will be the star traveller. Another Wellington-owned horse is Mrs M. Higgins’ three-year-old Paper V'~ Money—Afterglow Ally, j One of the two-year-olds is Quarto (by Paper Money—Quadrilatera). The other four youngsters were purchased at the national sales by “Mr Namoorg," of Melbourne, and have since been given their preliminary preparation by J. McLaughlin at Trentham. They are a Lord Warden— Moiselle colt, a Captain Brunsby—■Gazelia colt, a Hunting Song—Ayah Ally and a Ally by The ■ Ace —Mungakino. All are leaving Trentham in excellent condition. Mr Gardner will leave for Sydney next Thursday with Korokio, who has engagements at the spring meetings in Australia. DEMAND FOR INCOME TAX. , AUCKLAND RACING COMMITTEE. AUCKLAND, Thursday. The Commissioner of Taxes, has made a demand for payment of income lax covering the past four years on trust funds of the Auckland District. Racing Committee. The committee has always regarded these funds as benevolent funds, exempt from taxation, as no one has any legal claims on them and they are used for relieving idstressed .trainers and jockeys and their dependants. They have been built up as the result of Anes imposed on trainers and jockeys, and for several years the Auckland Racing Club made donations to the extent of i per cent, of prizemoney each season. The interest amounts to over £IOO a year.
An application tor exemption has been lodged with the Commissioner of Taxes, and the • committee is now awaiting his reply.

At the Kensington races to-day Eodapen, 8.2 (Bartle), won the Kensington Handicap by a length in 2m llis. Desert Star (New Zealand) was not placed. W. Broughton, who was brought over specially to ride the latter, will return to New Zealand by Friday’s steamer. Desert Star failed also at Victoria Park last Saturday. FIVE SHILLINGS TOTALISATOR. An application was made recently to the Government by the Australian Jockey Club for permission to introduce a Ave shilling totalisator at Randwick, mainly on the ground of the reduced spending power of the people and the consequent falling-off in the revenue from the ten shillings machine. The Government has replied stating that the matter is being held In abeyance until further Information is obtained. DEATH OF LIGHT BRIGADE. SYDNEY, Aug. 2. 'The New Zealand horses Light Brigade and Master Briefly, which arrived by the Marama on Tuesday in charge of Bagby, were on the tracks at Randwlck this morning. Light Brigade was a very sick horse and was placed under a veterinary surgeon, but died at midday from inAammation of the kidneys.
