HELPING THE CHILDREN

A CHEQUE FOR £1147. KINGSFORD-SMITH’S GENEROSITY. Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith was presented with a cheque for £1147 3s and a polished maple table at Sydney last week, and within a short while he parted with both. The Far West Children’s Health Scheme got the cheque and Lady Kingsford-Smith got the table. By way of consolation the Lord Mayor gave “Smithy” a very old halfsovereign. “It will do for Smithy junior," said the recipient. The presentation was made in the Town Hall by the committee of the Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith Testimonial Fund, which was formed, the Lord Mayor explained, to invite public subscription to a fund for the presentation to Sir Crarles of a suitable token of public esteem. Far West Children. With becoming generosity, added the Lord Mayor, Sir Charles, while expressing appreciation of the committee’s intention, stipulated that the proceeds should be devoted to the Far West Children’s Health Scheme. The subscriptions totalled £1512 18s 4d, the expenses were £365 15s 4d, and the net result was a cheque for £1147 3s. ' Sir Charles said that when the idea was first propounded to him he failed to see why he should financially benefit from any fund. He saw a solution, however, by giving assistance to the Far West kiddies under the welfare scheme.

Sir Charles then presented Rev. S. G. Drummond with the cheque, which was acknowledged with thanks.
