FRAUD AND THEFT.
POSED AS BENEFACTOR.
SIX MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT,

On a charge of theft Henry William Charles McKay was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. .Accused, when arrested last week, was charged under the name of Joseph Gordon Lamb. He had been posing as a benefactor of the poor and needy. Police Inquiries revealed that he was an habitual criminal, who used several aliases. lie was described as 'a labourer, aged 29 years. McKay was released on probation from the Auckland prison on April C, and since April 14, when he last reported, the police had lost, track of him. While staying at Warner’s Hotel he was Interviewed by detectives, who considered his explanation unsatisfactory and arrested him on a charge of obtaining credit by fraud. Subsequently they found that he had a quantity of stolen goods in his possession, and the owner had so far not been traced. Terms of imprisonment wore also imposed on the fraud charge and for breach of probation.
