ENTERTAINMENTS.

TO NIGHT’S PROGRAMMES

CIVIC THEATRE. “ EmployeesVEntranoe,” with an outstanding c£(st, Is one of the few screen dramas that has a single or central “Union Depot” and “Grand Hotel.” The scenes are practically all laid In a mammoth department store of a large city,’ with the drama of the employees enacted for the most part within its walls. It is the life of the clerks and sales force and office help behind the scenes—a life teeming with human emotions, love, hate, fear, loyalty, and passion—that is veiled from the public gaze. While the action takes place within four walls the with lightning-like rapidity from personality to personality, from the president down to the little model who rolls her eyes and vamps the boss; they shift from department to department, from offices to sales rooms, taking in all the varied activity of the force. All the favourite airs from “Desert Song" will be sung by Bernice Claire and Alexander Gray in a condensed version of the favourite musical play. THEATRE ROYAL. The exotlo background of the Egyptian desert serves to enhance the essentially romantic theme of “A Night in Cairo.” The film opens In Cairo, where a young woman of social prominence, Diana, played by Alyrna Loy, arrives to marry an engineer stationed in Egypt, Reginald Denny. Diana Instantly attracts the notice of a native dragoman or guide, played by Ramon Novarro, and by means of numbers of subterfuges he manages to have himself attached to -Diana’s party of friends in the capacity of official adviser regarding the attractions for tourists. Mr Novarro shows much talent in his portrayal of the part of Jamil, the dragoman. There is an excellent supporting programme, the principal film being “Me and My Pal,” a Laurel and Hardy comedy! When Mr Hardy is about to be married Mr Laurel, as best man, •commits the faux pas of sending a funeral wreath to the bride. He also ruins the ceremony by interesting practically everybody in a jig-saw puzzle. Paul Gerard Smith’s lively narrative in “Duck Hunter’s Paradise,” a novelty feature, and also In "Bone Crushers," which reveals how wrestlers train, is exceptionally good. STRAND THEATRE. In “A Lady’s Profession” Roland Young, as the owner uf a title and many mortgaged acres in England, faces bankruptcy by turning his back on the property, and with his sister and daughter tries his luck In winning a fortune in America. Thu* come glorious opportunities for the popular comedian and the equally popular Alison Skipworth, both of whom receive fine support from Sari Alaritza, as the daughter of the bankrupt, baronet widower. The way in which Alison Skipworth, aS a titled lady who arrives third class, wrestles with and conquers the intricacies of American slang, Is in itself worth drawing an audience. To disclose the plot of the story would militate against its enjoyment by those who will laugh at the unexpected developments it unfolds, and revel In the delightful contrasts between the attitudes of one class of Englishman and another of American. These contrasts are at- times cleverly subtle, at others broadly farcical. “A Lady’s Profession” may seem a strange title for the tale, but when one sees and hears how Alison Skipworth grips and adapts herself fo a situation it becomes apparent that the real “profession" in the story is to create laughter. r ROXY THEATRE. “Out All Night," featuring Zasu Pitts and Slim Summerville, will head the new programme at the Roxy Theatre to-day. This is a hilarious comedy, with witty dialogue and amusing situations, and the famous comedy pair keep the fun going at a ( furious pace. In the supporting programme is “Sport of a Nation, a very interesting film, and several other entertaining subjects. RECITAL OF MODERN VERSE. The Poet Laureate (John Masefield) will be represented by two stirring poems, and New Zealand writers by works from the pens of Eileen Duggan, Richard James, Edna Graham Alacky hnd Ralph Park. Mrs lan Stuart will be beard in several groups of songs.. The accompanist will bo Airs 11. Hammond.
