WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

ROTO-O-RANGI. The July meeting of the Roto-o-rangi Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs Shale, who presided over an attendance of 30 members and visitors. The roll call was favourite recipes. Mrs Godfrey was responsible for the motto. To an appreciative audience Mrs Hounslow gave an excellent demonstration on the construction of lampshades in paper and silk. Mrs Hounslow also exhibited an exquisitely dressed period doll. A paper hat competition caused much merriment. The result being: Mrs Cooper 1, Mrs Gulland 2, Miss Lyle 3. Articles useful and decorative, made from sugar bags created much interest, competition being keen and judging difllcult. Mrs Hounslow and Miss Hulse judged the exhibits, the awards being as follows: Mrs Peake 1, Mrs H. Martin 2, Mrs Cooper 3. An animated talk on current topics proved engrossing, exceeding the five minutes allowed. It was decided to organise a clothes drive, the result of which will be forwarded to a distributing centre. The hostesses, Mrs R. Martin, Mrs Stone and Mrs Cooper, provided a delicious afternoon tea. Mrs Cooper presented the institute with a blackboard and easel. An enjoyable afternoon closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

MAUNGATAUTAIH BRANCH. A very'pleasant afternoon was spent at Orepunga when several members of the Maungatautari Women’s Instii tute visited there to meet residents interested and desirous of joining the institute. The Orepunga ladies had made the big barn which was used for the occasion, most attractive with couches, chairs, tables, with huge vases of gloden wattle, and rugs on the floor. Mrs E. Nickle (president), gave a short address during the afternoon on the aims of the institute and of the progress of the Maungatautari branch since its formation a few months ago. Recitations given by Mrs Allison, of Ilorahora and Miss Sharpe, Auckland, were much enjoyed by all. After a dainty afternoon tea had been served, hearty thanks were accorded Mr a'nd Mrs Newcombe for the use of their barn and help given. If satisfactory transport can be arranged, the Maungatautari Institute should welcome several keen new members from the Orepunga district at its next meeting. TE HOE BRANCH. Mrs E. A. Thompson presided over a good attendance of members ami friends, at the recent monthly meeting of the Te Hoe Women’s Institute. Three new members were enrolled. Triangle badges were sold to assist (lie Hamilton Y.M.C.A.. The institute i competition “Best article made from | 2s worth of New Zealand wool,” was j won hv Mrs Gaby and Mrs McQueen, j The winners of the hostesses’ com- j petition were Mrs Yearbury and Miss , Brown. Musical items and recitations j were given by Miss Thompson and i Miss lc Heron.
