BUILDING SUBSIDY.
HAMILTON APPLICATIONS.
NEARLY £SOOO INVOLVED.
TEN NEW RESIDENCES. An indication that there will he a renewal of activity in the building trade in Hamilton during the next few months is provided in the fact that already nineteen, applications for the building subsidy have been lodged at the local office of the Labour Department, and there is an increasing demand for application forms. ■■ A number of requests for subsidisation of labour costs have been forwarded to Wellington, with the reoommendation that they should be approved. The total capital cost involved In these applications is £4850, and labour will account for about £I2OO. The outstanding feature is the fact that ten new residences in and around Hamilton are included In the work covered by the applications. If the subsidy Is granted in these cases It is probable that a large measure of the work will he carried out by Hamilton workmen.
It is apparent that people are recognising the useful assistance which the subsidy provides, and as a result the building trade should receive muchneeded stimulation. Many Inquiries regarding building are being received, and it is reasonable to assume that while there will not he a boom in the trade, it will be restored to a degree of normal activity. The building trade is regarded by many as a barometer of industry, and renewed activity in the trade will do more than anything else to relieve unemployment and restore confidence. The offer of the Government to subsidise the work should be an added incentive to property-owners to provide work for tradesmen and artisans, and at the same time save no small sum on their building costs. Applications for the subsidy can be made at the looal -office of the Labour Department. ■ ' 1 '
