STARTLING ALLEGATION
THRASHED WITH POKER?
UNUSUAL ASSAULT CHARGE. THE ACCUSED REMANDED. “ Somewhat unusual evidence will be tendered in this case,” stated De-tective-Sergeant J. Thompson In the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court this morning, when Francis Joseph Walmsley (26), and Leslie William Walmsley (29), appeared on a charge of assaulting Vivian St. Clair at Te Mata yesterday. On the application Of the detectivesergeant the accused wore remanded by Mr 3. L. Paterson, S.M., to appear on Friday. Mr H. G.-M. Norris, for the accused, asked for bail. “ These men were arrested at 2 o’clock this morning, and the circumstances are rather unusual,” said Mr Thompson. “ Some time yesterday a statement was written out by some of the Walmsley family, it is alleged, saying that a neighbouring farmer offered St. Clair £IOO to put some of his sheep on the Wa-lmsleys’ property, indicating that the sheep had been stolen. It is -alleged they stood over St. Clair with a poker and thrashed (him until he signed the statement.” Mr Norris: They are prepared to give an undertaking not to go near the man.
Bail was allowed in one surety of £SO sell' each and two sureties of £SO each.
