QUOTAS OPPOSED.
TARANAKI DAIRYFARMERS
FREE MARKETS SUPPORTERS
REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT,
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) STRATFORD, Monday
A large meeting of Taranaki dairy farmers unanimously expressed Its opposition to quotas or restriction of dairy exports, and supported the principle of a free market policy. The President of the Farmers’ Union, Mr W. J. Poison, M.P., said the quotas were a colossal blunder. He contended that the Ottawa agreement made no mention of quotas and despite Mr Coates’ statement that the British Government had imposed frozen meat quotas to assist Australia and South Africa, the restriction of butter supplies would increase the tendency to create substitutes, thus decreasing the demand for the New Zealand product.
The following resolutions were carried :
(a) “ That this meeting of supporters of the policy of free markets urges New Zealand to offer Britain definite opportunities for reciprocal advantages in the New Zealand markets in exchange for the advantages of free markets in Britain.”
(b) “That the opinion of this meeting of Taranaki dairy farmers be conveyed to the Government with a request that nothing should be done by our representatives attending the London conference to prejudice the position regarding free markets.”
