THE OPENING DAY

HIGH COMMISSIONER SCORES,

Ideal weather conditions favoured the opening day of the Te Kuiti Racing Club’s annual fixture at Te Rapa on Saturday and the racing throughout was of an interesting nature. The racing surface, while somewhat holding, was in excellent order. The large attendance must have been extremely gratifying to the club, which was holding its initial meeting at Te Rapa. Make Up won the big cross-coun-try event in impressive style, and Gibraltar annexed the President’s Handicap. High Commisioner came home with something to spare in the open hurdles.

United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright,

BRISBANE, .May 21

The Doombcn Newmarket, the principal event at Hie opening of the Doombcn racecourse yesterday, provided a sensational finish. Woilun, a mystery horse from Armldale, won in the last stride. His rider, Hayes, lost an iron and seemed to lose control, ' jamming Closing Time (owned by the ex-New Zealand trainer, J. T. Jamieson) on to the rails in the last furlong. A protest was lodged, E. Bar tic, rider of Closing Time, saying that his mount was badly hampered, while Wollun's rider admitted losing an iron and ' hampering Closing Time. However, • the stewards dismissed the protest. Jamieson thereupon decided to take Closing Time and Voyager back to Sydney. Critics suggest Hint, Woilun would have won the race anyway if his rider bad not Lost an iron. Result: —
