ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
WANDERERS PREVAIL.
DEFEAT OF UNITED.
When United and Wanderers met at Scddon Park on Saturday in the first half there was little to choose between the teams, but in the second spell the Greens .suffered a complete eclipse and conceded six without reply. Each side obtained a goal In the first half. The game resulted In Wanderers’ favour by 7 goals to 1. The collapse of United was largely due to the cleverness ana speed of Stewart and Crabb, the former 'claiming five of his team’s total of 7 goals. Davis was the successful marksman for United.
In the first half both sides were responsible for some clever football, and if the Wanderers were slightly superior the half-time score of 1-1 was a fair indication of merit, as Kennedy and Davis for United created openings which with better fortune attendant upon their finishing efforts might have given them a lead at halftime. ' Tlio teams were:—
Wanderers. Raven, Gardiner, Caldwell, Connew, Smith, Buliock, Crabb, Rogers, Stewart, Cavaye, McLean. United. —Russell, J. Crabb, Davison, Reid, Burdis, Carson, Kennedy, Haycock. Davis, Seolt, Wallace. Mr W. Green was referee.
Ccmmetns.
The Wanderers gave, a very sound display and their team was very satisfactory. With one or two places in the team strengthened they will he a difficult team to beat. Raven kept his usual good goal and Gardiner and Caldwell were safe full-backs. The half-backs were reliable. Smith should refrain from too many attempts to score, for neither of his efforts on Saturday appeared likely to succeed, while lie frequently attempted shots at goal with Ids forwards waiting in position. Rogers was not a success at inside right. Crabb and Stewart were in their right places at outside right and centre forward respectively. Cavaye worked hard and was a successful defender when moved into the half-back line. McLean needs more experience before taking his place permanently among the seniors. He is developing nicely.
For (he losers it can be said they never gave up trying. Russell had an unenviable time in goal. ,1. Crabb was the safest of the full backs, and made many good clearances. Bunds was the best half-back, although, a Irltlc slow. lie defends well, and liis passes to Ids forwards are always nicely along the ground. ' Reid, is a heller forward .than half-hack. Kennedy and Haycock were Hie .host of Ihe forwards. Scott has played heller on each of Ids 1 previous games 11 1 is season, and Wallace could centre more accurately, lie gives promise. as a good winger.
