NEWS OF THE TALKIES.

Out In Stars' Salaries. Smack goes the high costs of movie stars 1 says an American movie magazine. And isn’t it about time? Along with the rest of the world Hollywood is feeling the depression’s pinch in a real way. It looks as if the day of million-dollar contracts were over. The stars whose salaries will be hit include some of the biggest. A number of their contracts are expiring, including thos~e of . Maurice Chevalier, Marlene Dietrioh, Ann Harding, Ruth Chatterton, William Powell, the Marx Brothers, and John Gilbert. These have all been big-money contracts: Chevalier, about £2OOO a week; Marlene Dietrich about £1000; Ann Harding, £40,000 per picture; Ruth Chatteron and WilliamvPowell averaging around £1500; the Marx Brothers £40,000 per picture, and Jack Gilbert £50,000 a film. There isn’t enough money in film receipts to-day to justify these stipends. Mr Arliss will require stronger films than he has had recently—“ A Successful Calamity,” “ The Man Who Played God,” and “The King’s Vacation ” —if he is to retain his popularity.
