ITEMS OF INTEREST. military sports. EXCELLENT HORSEMANSHIP. (Special to Times.) The Waikato Mounted Rrlfles, encamped at the Cambridge Trotting Club ,, 9 course, held their regimental sports yesterday In Ideal weather. There was a large -attendance of spectators, whc were treated to thrilling exhibitions of horsemanship. Competition was particularly keen. B squadron was successful in retaining the Sports Cup for the highest aggregate points. A demonstration of machine guns going Into action was given by the winning sub-section. Results of the events were as follows: — Flag race: Trooper Henry (B squadron) 1, Sgt. Johnstone (B squadron) t. Tug-o-war on horseback, team of 6: B squadron 1, A squadron 2. Leading horse -over jumps: Sgt. Johnstone (B squadron) 1, Trooper Henry (B squadron) 2. Lloyd-Lindsay: C squadron 1, B squadron 2. Victo-la cross raoe: Trooper Henry (B squadron) i, Sgt. Johnstone (B squadron) 2. Individual tent pegging: Sgt. Johnstone 1, Sgt. Vernon (B -squadron) 2. Sectional tent-pegging: B squadron 1, A and C squadrons equal 2. Wrestling on horseback (teams of 6) : Headquarters squadron 1, B squadron 2.
WAIKATO HOUNDS. MEET AT TAMAHERE. The Waikato hounds held a successful meet yesterday, when a field of between 50 and sixty followers met the master, Mr Wynn Brown, and the first whip, Mr Ned Brown, with 15 couple of hounds. Hounds were thrown off at Mr W. Newell’s property, and with hares plentiful a good day’s sport was -provided. There was hardly an empty saddle all afternoon. Runs took place • over the properties of Messrs Newell and McKenzie. GOVERNMENT IN BUSINESS. AD-DRESS AT CAMBRIDGE. In the oourse of a tour of the Dominion. Messrs J. Pearce Luke (vicepresident) and A. 0. Heany (secretary), of the Associated Chamber of •Commerce, visited Cambridge yesterday and addressed members of the local chamber at a luncheon. Mr S. Vale (president), -presided over a moderate attendance. In his address, Mr Heany, trenchantly criticised the attitude of State Departments In encroaching upon private business. He made a strong appeal to the local chamber to come In behind the Associated Chamber's movement to light the attitude of the Government. The address by Mr Heany was solidly supported by Mr Luke. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the visitors by Mr F. Lye, M.P. Mr C. H. Priestley (Mayor) welcomed the visitors to Cambridge.
SHOW COMMITTEE. ARRANGEMENTS FOR GYMKHANA. In connection with the gymkhana to be held at the showgrounds on May 26, an organising meeting of the show executive was held yesterday, when the president, Mr J. S. Fisher, presided over a good at•tendance It was decided that the band’s offer to provide a programme be accepted with thanks. The following offloials were appointed:—Starter, Mr W. Banks; Judge, Mr H. Crowther; assistant starter, Messrs J. and W. MoMullan; supervisor of horse events, Mr W. Wallace; stewards, Messrs S. McMullan and H. Butler; clerk of the course and call stewards, Messrs F. Fisher, R. Nolan and E. Speake. It was* decided to have a "working bee" on Friday. The women's division of the Farmers’ Union wrote agreeing to cato>’ for refreshments. The band committee wrote thanking the association for a donation of £3 3s. The Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, advised that tho association’s application for a share In the profits of a Dominion art union would have consideration. The meeting approved of the suggested show dates for Cambridge on Wednesday, February 28, and Thursday, March 1.
