WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
HOROTIU BRANCH. The May meeting of the Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Friday, May 12. Mrs W. Martin (president) presided over a large gathering. The meeting was a social afternoon to the pioneers of Horotiu, a very delightful time belfig enjoyed by all. Very interesting reminiscences of 1871 were related by Mrs Washer, sen. (Epsom), and of 1887 by Mrs Fuller (Ngaruawahia). A very nice programme was much enjoyed: Pianoforte solo by Miss E. Hall, pianoforte duets by Mrs W. Martin and Miss E. Starr, songs by Mrs D. Welch and Mrs Fuller (Ngaruawahia), vocal duets by Mrs W. Martin and Mrs D. Weloh, elocution by Miss E. Starr, aocordeon solo by Mrs Metcalfe. Mrs D. Weloh was the winner of the competition. Games were much enjoyed after a dainty afternoon tea. The pioneers present were: Mrs Washer, sen, Miss E. Washer, Epsom; Mrs Fuller, Ngaruawahia; Mesdames Duxfleld, Green and Henderson,! Horotiu. During the afternoon bouquets were presented to the pioneers and visitors. It was decided to send the secretary (Mrs Law) as delegate to the June conference. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Paddy, Metcalfe, Fry and Hutchison.
Members please note, the June meeting will be held on the 10th, and will be our first birthday. Husbands’ evening proved a huge success. Mesdames Martin and Jacobs are to be congratulated for such a delightful programme, games, and competitions. Everything went with a swing and was most enjoyable. Dancing was indulged in to a late hour. 4T EUREKA. A branch of the Women’s Institute was formed at Eureka on Thursday, May 11. Mrs Ryan, member of the Waikato Federation, was the organiser, and gave intending members an interesting talk on the aims and rules of the institute. The election of officers resulted in the following being elected: —President, Mrs G. Hinton; secretary. Mrs C. Cresswell; treasurer, Mrs P. Shine; committee, Mesdames Clarkin, Townsend, Masters and 1.. Hinton.
The new branoh started with a y membership of 17. Visitors were | present from Motumaoho and Gordon- fig ton. Mrs Sang conveyed good wishes R from Morrlnsville and Motumaoho ■ Institutes. 1 After all business had been attended | to the president proposed a hearty ( vote of thanks to Mrs Ryan, which j was earned by acclamation. The serving of a dainty afternoon tea brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. ______________
