“ Interference ” will be given at New Plymouth next week by the Palmerston North Amateur Operatic and PraififtUA Society,
Repertory In Hamilton. I understand there is a movement afoot to form a Repertory Theatre in
Hamilton, giving two or three productions a year.
. In view of the growing interest in the drama, such a movement should be very successful. Most centres in New Zealand now have their Repertory Theatre, staging comedies and dramas with success. Why not Hamilton?
Hamilton Operatlo Society. At a meeting of the committee of the Hamilton Operatic Society Mr Harold Piper was appointed musio director.
The ohoioe of an opera was discussed, and though no decision was arrived at it is expected that an early selection will be made and that rehearsals will he called in the near future. Suocoßß of "A Runaway Girl.” The Christohureh Operatio Society’s production of “ A Runaway Girl ’’ last week was a great artistic and financial success. For the last two performances (matinee and evening) on Saturday hundreds were turned away, and the takings Were a record, amounting to £270 (the highest priced seats were 4s). Playbox's Next Production. The Hamilton Playbox, which recently scored a big success in “Lilies ’of the Field," will stage the comedy, “The Man from Toronto,” by D. Murray, in a couple of months. The Playbox also bolds fortnightly readings of plays, the next being "Allce-by-thc-Flre," by A. A. Milne. Drama League In England. The British Drama League has received entries Jrom 650 amateur theatrical societies for its seventh annual National Festival of Community Drama, which has been largely responsible for a revival in England of the one-aot play. The London Anal for the Lord Howard de Walden Cup, the “peak" of the amateur year In England, will take place on May 22 before a panel of experts. Other Aotlvltles. "The Spinster Who Spun," written by Mrs. Neil.o Porter, of Auckland, will be staged by the Sydney Repertory Theatre this month. * m v m The Ashburton Repertory Theatre is to produce “London Wall.” a play in which the New Zealand actress Marie Ney scored a big success in London.
“The Arcadians" was successfully singed at Sydney by the Mosmnn Musical Society last week.
Mr. Reg Tapley, formerly a member of Williamson musical comedies, is acting as producer for “Les Cinches do Corncville," with the Dunedin Operatic Society.
