PROGRESS OF EDUCATION

ADDRESS TO PARENTS. WEST SCHOOL ASSOCIATION. Under the auspices of the Hamilton West Home and School Association a lecture evening was held in the Centreway Tea Rooms last night. The lecturer, the headmaster, Mr Ilall, addressed a gathering of about 80 parents and friends. He took as his subject “ Education of 40 years ago compared with that of to-day.” The subject was very capably handled, the lecturer fully and lucidly describing the old system of bullying and endeavouring to drive home facts Into rebellious minds, adopted in early methods of education. Then followed an historical outline of the progress made in the methods and financial assistance rendered by Governments toward education. Tho address concluded with a very clear and illustrative outline of the methods now aDopted to help children and win their confidence and esteem and so enable them to more quickly and easily grasp the subject taught. The lecture was Interspersed with drawings, children’s recitations, and an exhibition of samples of work done by pupils. At the conclusion Mr Hall was accorded a vote of appreciation.

Musical items were rendered by Mrs G. Boves, Master Bonner and Mr Sweet and Miss James recited. Similar evenings will be held during the year.
