OUTRAGES IN MELBOURNE BANK ROBBER KILLED. BOOKMAKER SHOT AT. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. MELBOURNE, April 23 Tragedy followed a bank robbery yesterday in Carlton, a sub,urb of Melbourne. A man entered the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian Bank and threw pepper in the eyes of tile teller, Mr Frswin. Then he seized a pile of notes. The ledger-keeper, Mr Hayes, noted the action of the intruder, drew a pistol and shot him in the chest. The robber fell on his back and the notes were scattered. He rose and rushed for the door where a woman, Mrs O’Halloran, who had heard the shot, attempted to stop him. The thief struck her and made off, but he collapsed in a lane close to the bank. He was taken to hospital and died a few minutes later, having refused to give his name. He has not yet been identified. The teller's eyes were badly injured by the pepper. The notes were recovered.
