LIQUOR IN QUEBEC
DIMINISHED SALES. DECREASE OF OVER 20 PER CENT. (Empire Press Union.) MONTREAL. February 20. A decrease of more than 20 per cent in the consumption of spilrts in the province of Quebec —or from -865,858 gallons to 092,270 gallons in a year,—is shown in the latest annual report of the Quebec Liquor Commission. The decrease in wines, use of which in preference to spirits is encouraged by the Commission, was much less pronounced. The total fell from 1,351,183 gallons to 1.131,737 gallons, ports and sherries accounting for the greater part of the quantity. Residents and tourists spent with the Commission during the year a total of 17.979.752 dollars (about £3.000,000) as compared with £4,500,000 the previous year and the record sum of £5,500,000 two years earlier. The Federal Government took in taxes last year about £1,200,000, ami the Commission had a net revenue, which went to the provincial Government, of about the same amount. These figures do not. include beer, which in Quebec is sold in taverns and restaurants for consumption on the premises.
