CLEARING THE SLIPS AWAY.

GOOD WORK BEING DONE.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) RAETIHI, Friday.

Work is proceeding smoothly between Kakahi and Aianunui the centre of the slips. Dozens of small slips have to be cleared. The maintenance and railway officials are doing exceptionally good work, under trying conditions. There is no idea at present as to when the slips will be cleared for regular traffic. It is a big job. Tlie scene of the slips is about 36 miles above Ohakune. Exceptionally fine weather is helping the work considerably. The road to Taumarunui is nearly clear.

GISBORNE TO OPOTIKI.

ROAD COAIMUNICATION RESTORED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE. (By Telegraph.—press Association.) GISBORNE, Friday. Overland communication between Gisborne and Opotiki was restored today via the old Alotu Gorge route. The Waioeka road was badly damaged by Tuesday’s storm and floods, the river undermining the roadline near Trafford’s homestead, just within the Opotiki county boundary. The extent of the trouble is indicated by a request from the Tauranga public works engineer for a gang to start at this end of the damaged section, as it was impossiule to get through to make a full survey of the reparation necessary. The Waikoho County engineer has put a gang on the roadline, where wash-outs have practically obliterated the route for a short distance.
