WALKING TO WELLINGTON. • FIFTY MILES IN ONE DAY. There is no end to the army of long-distance hiking enthusiasts who have passed through Hamilton during the summer. The latest arrival is N. .McCarthy, an eighteen-year-old Aucklander, who set out from Auckland at 6 a’.m. on Wednesday with the intention of reaching Wellington in 12 days. , , Un the first day he tramped ol miles to Rangiriri, where he spent the night. Leaving Rangiriri at 7.30 a.m. yesterday, lie arrived at Hamilton at 5.55 p.m. ‘T have done practically no training," young McCarthy, who is a former Sacred Heart College boy, told a Waikato Times reporter. "I am doing this chietly to popularise road walking and I am receiving no subsidies or assistance from any organisation. 1 started out with 3d in my pocket and 1 rejected four offers of lifts. My average speed was 4.2 miles per hour." For three years McCarthy was longdistance running and walking champion of Sacred Heart College. He is a leading member of tiie Lymiale Amateur Athletic Club, Auckland.
