NEW ZEALAND LEGION.
ANOTHER NEW PARTY. y 4
OUTLINE OF ITS PROPOSALS. 1 NOT A FASCISTI MOVEMENT. Following certain movements among the farming community In different parts of New Zealand, business and professional men were approached a short, time ago with a view to uniting all resources of the country and obliterating all sectional interests (said Dr. 11. Campbell Begg, of Wellington). At a meeting at which all Interests were represented tentative proposals were discussed, 'the object of the proposals was to' unite all thc people of New Zealand to meet the national crisis, which seemed to be approaching. As' a result ol‘ these proposals it ■was decided to sound the opinion of Hie country in order to see whether aii organisation on these lines was desirable. 11 was expected that if the movement were 'suecesslul it would secure a membership of -'iOO.OUO men and women, representing all shades Jf responsible political opinion, continued Dr. Begg. No distinction would be made in its jiehibcrship-; all parlies- were eligible, uid it aimed at opposing any unconstitutional action. . Tlic objects tentatively -put forward far the organisation until it comes into definite being are as follows:—The organisation (the New Zealand Legion) would represent an emergency movement lo meet a national crisis; it aims at organising the whole people of New Zealaid lor ihe safety and security of the Dominion; it proposes by means of organisation and the directed voting power of the people themselves to secure a Government composed of men and women of integrity and intellect freed from sectional pressure; its sole aim is more efficient government based on national inleresls; its pledge is loyalty to the King, Ihe British Empire and the New Zealand constitution. ‘•As It has been stated in some clusters that this movement, is something in Ihe nature of a Fascist! movement,” said Dr. Begg. "it cannot be too emphatically staled that it opposes all movements of this nature, and no action could possibly be taken other than by constitutional means. It has no thought of any political party. It is a national movement purely and simply to meet a national crisis, and will loyally support and Government which is ruling according to the New Zealand constitution.”
