LAND SETTLEMENT.
MR D. BRYANT'S SCHEME. FUND STILL REQUIRES £4OO. The time limit set by the Auckland Savings Bank for the Waikato Land Settlement Society to qualify for the £IO,OOO donation offered by the batik to augment the society’s funds .is drawing to a close, and £4OO is required to complete the necessary amount. The society has until the end of next month to raise its quota, and the hbpe has been expressed that this will be achieved, so that Mr D. V. Bryant’s scheme can be put into operation. Several donations have been received during the past few days, including one of £IOO from an Auckland trading bank. “If the £4OO necessary to raise our present total to £IO,OOO Is not forthcoming in donations, money already handed in will be rturned to the donors," said Mr Bryant. “I consider the need for a land settlement scheme is still as great as it ever was, in spite of the falling prices of primary products," he said. “It is the moral effect on those employed on the scheme that is so important.” It was the duty of every citizen, he said, to help the Government to solve the unemployment problem, and not blame It for what it has already dono. Although the Government would still have to pay relief wages in the developmental stages of the scheme, tho educative value of a land settlement policy would he great. Farmers especially were realising the need for such a scheme as was proposed.
