FAST SWIMMING.

TECHNICAL GIRLS’ SPORTS ANNUAL PROGRAMME DECIDED. SIX NEW RECORDS MADE. Conditions could hardly have been better for the Hamilton Technical High School girls’ swimming sports in the Municipal Baths yesterday afternoon, and a large -gallery of spectators witnessed some of the keenest swimming seen in the -baths this season. Prom the opening event fast times were the order, and no less than six of .the existing school records were shattered, in most -cases by substantial margins. Entries in the comprehensive programme were good, the juniors being prominent. The -sports were excellently run, and not a hitch occurred, a fact which reflected credit on Miss D. Osmers, who had cha-ge of the arrangements, and -her helpers. The judges were Misses E. M. Marieley, N. Melville and N. Attwood, while Mr W. Fraser, the- principal, acted as starter. The championship events were particularly well-oontested, a keen tussle in which D. Stokes, M. Barton and E. Barton were the principals, characterising the senior division. These three girls swam consistently In all the title events, and the honours were fairly evenly distributed, M. Barton winning -the -school championship from D. Stokes with a majority of six points. The junior section was won in convincing fashion by D. Baird, who was twelve points ahead of J'. lloss when the final tallies were made. Principal interest was centred in the competition for the Inter-House Shield. Points towards this trophy were awarded -to each of the -placed competitors in -the various events. The Arawa representatives met with most success, scoring 148 i points, while the Tokomaru team were next in order with 1084, from Aotea 101, and Tainui 57. In addition to a 'big gallery of pupils fro-m the school, the sports were witnessed by a good number of parents.

The Now Records. Six new records were established during the afternoon, three being made by seniors and a similar number in junior events. In ttn 100 yards school championship M. Barton covered the distance in lm‘ 25 4-ss, easily heating the record of I. Hobbs, im 33 2-ss, set up in 1931. A particularly good performance was registered by D. Stokes in winning the 33 1-3 yards senior title in 23 3-5 seconds, or 3-5 of a second better than the time recorded by Isobei Hobbs in- 1930. The third new senioirecord was established by Z. St. Clair, who beat her own time of last year, 30 2-ss, by compleitng the 33 1-3 yards backstroke race in 28 4-ss. D. Baird clipped one second off A. Taylor’s fast time of 25s for the junior 33 1-3 yards title, which has stood since 1931. The new record holder swam particularly well throughout the afternoon. Another junior who achieved considerable success was J. Irving,, who was responsible for two new records. In the 50 yards championship her time was 3-5 s better than that of B. Gardner, 41 4-5, registered in 1932, while she covered 66 2-3 yards In 58s, beating B. Gardener’s record of last year by 1 2-ss. On the whole the times for all events were very good and indicated that the school possesses many good swimmers this year. Th® Results.
