MARKED CALVES.

RECENT HAWERA FAIR.

LOWER AVERAGE PRICE. “ Though the best calves were as good in quality, on an average the yarding was not up to the standard of last year,” said Mr C. M. Hume, supervisor of the Dominion Group Herd Testing Federation, to-day, referring to the second marked calf fair held under the auspices of the South Taranaki Herd Testing Association at Hawera last week. .Mr Hume remarked that, compared with last, year’s fair the coloairs were nio-e mixed and the calves were probably not quite so well done. The offering totalled 149 of which 109 were sold under the hammer. The average price for those sold was £3 10s 6d as against £'» 5s last year. Some of the animals disposed of went to Tc Aroha, Dannevirkc and Southland and the remainder were distributed locally. With the exception of one lino of Friesians all entries were Jerseys.

of Iho three prizes offered by the association the first went to Mr R. J. Lynn, who, with a line of five registered top price of £6. F. Hoskins (Matapu). came second, the prico being £5 10s, and W. Bourke (Manaia) was third, the price being £4 ids. The judges were Messrs R. J. Lynn and F. W. Mills. Marked calf fairs were first introduced by the Dominion Federation at Frankton in January i 9-7. It was an Instant success and in Iho following year fairs were held at Morrinsvillc, Frankton and Tc Awamutu. More recently it lias been found that many farmers prefer to retain their pedigree young stock for herd building and at (tome fairs it has been diftlcull to obtain suflleient entries.
